Zinc in Skincare: Mineral SPF, Acne, and More
Zinc oxide in sunscreen, zinc supplements for acne, and zinc-containing serums — what each form does and what the evidence supports.
Zinc shows up in skincare in three distinct roles: as a mineral UV filter (zinc oxide in sunscreen), as a topical anti-acne ingredient (zinc acetate, zinc PCA), and as an oral supplement for inflammatory acne. The evidence varies meaningfully across these three applications, so it's worth understanding each separately.
- Zinc oxide (sunscreen): FDA-approved UV filter, broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB), photostable, and well-tolerated by sensitive skin. The main downside is white cast at higher concentrations — tinted formulas solve this.
- Topical zinc (anti-acne): zinc acetate and zinc PCA reduce Cutibacterium acnes bacteria and regulate sebum. Often combined with erythromycin (antibiotic) in prescription formulas to reduce antibiotic resistance.
- Oral zinc: several meta-analyses show modest benefit for inflammatory acne, roughly comparable to oral antibiotics but with fewer resistance concerns. Evidence is moderate quality. Common side effect: nausea (take with food).
- Zinc deficiency itself worsens acne — if diet is poor, supplementation may help more than for those with adequate zinc levels.
