Azelaic Acid: The Overlooked Multitasker
Anti-inflammatory, brightening, and gentle enough for rosacea — why azelaic acid deserves more attention, and how to use it.
Azelaic acid is one of the few skincare actives that simultaneously treats acne, reduces redness from rosacea, and fades dark spots — without the irritation profile of retinoids or strong acids. It works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase (which produces melanin) and killing the bacteria that drive acne, while reducing inflammatory signals in the skin.
- At 10% OTC: effective for mild-to-moderate acne and early hyperpigmentation.
- At 15–20% prescription: demonstrated efficacy for rosacea (papulopustular subtype) and melasma.
- One of very few actives considered safe to use during pregnancy — discuss with your doctor.
- Pairs well with niacinamide, SPF, and gentle moisturisers. Avoid combining with other strong acids on the same application.
- Can cause mild tingling on application, especially in the first few weeks. This usually fades.
