The Moisture Sandwich Technique

Layering your moisturiser between two hits of water to lock in lasting hydration — the method, the science, and who it helps most.

The moisture sandwich is a layering technique designed to maximise hydration: dampen skin with water or a hydrating toner, apply your moisturiser while skin is still damp, then optionally mist again to seal the surface.

Why dampness matters

Humectants in moisturisers — like hyaluronic acid and glycerin — work by drawing water toward the skin. When applied to already-damp skin, they have water immediately available to bind, rather than pulling it from deeper skin layers (which can paradoxically cause dehydration in dry environments).

Ingredient spotlight — Hyaluronic Acid

A humectant that binds up to 1,000× its weight in water, drawing moisture to the surface layers of skin.

Good for

  • Dry skin
  • Dehydrated skin
  • Any skin type as a hydration booster

Use with caution if

  • Very dry climates with no occlusive layer on top — it can draw moisture out of the skin instead
