Post-Workout Skincare: A Practical Routine
What to do for your skin immediately after training — cleansing, moisturising, and the fastest routine that actually covers what matters.
The golden rule for post-workout skin is simple: cleanse promptly, then restore. Sweat, heat, and friction create ideal conditions for breakouts and irritation — but an aggressive response makes things worse. The goal is to remove what has built up without stripping the skin further.
- Cleanse within 30 minutes of finishing exercise where possible. A gentle, low-pH cleanser is enough — do not use strong actives immediately post-workout when skin is already stressed.
- For acne-prone skin: a salicylic acid cleanser (1–2%) used post-workout is more effective than a serum here — it rinses off and is gentler than a leave-on treatment on inflamed, post-exercise skin.
- Moisturise after — skin is more permeable post-workout, which means actives absorb faster, but also that moisture loss is faster. A lightweight gel moisturiser suits most post-workout skin.
- Morning workout: apply SPF after your post-workout cleanse rather than before, since sweat will have removed your morning application.
- Evening workout: a gentle cleanse and basic moisturiser are all you need — no need to repeat your full PM routine if you already did it earlier.
- For back and chest acne: wear moisture-wicking fabrics and shower promptly. These areas respond well to benzoyl peroxide washes used a few times per week.
