How to Patch Test (and Why You Should)

The two-minute habit that prevents breakouts, reactions, and wasted products — exactly where to test, for how long, and what to look for.

Patch testing is applying a small amount of a new product to a discreet area of skin before using it on your whole face. It takes minutes and can save you weeks of healing from an avoidable reaction.

How to do it

  1. Choose a test site — the inner arm or behind the ear are low-stakes areas. Some prefer the jaw or neck for a more face-accurate test.
  2. Apply a small amount of the new product to that spot once or twice a day.
  3. Wait 48–72 hours before drawing conclusions. Some reactions take a couple of days to show up.
  4. If there is no redness, swelling, itching, or breakout, you can reasonably introduce it to your face.
