Morning vs. Night Routine: What Changes and Why
Your skin has different needs in the morning (defend) and at night (repair). Here is what to keep, swap, and drop in each routine.
Morning and night routines serve opposite purposes. In the morning you are building a shield — antioxidants (like vitamin C) neutralise free radicals from UV and pollution, and SPF blocks UV before it reaches your skin. At night your skin shifts into repair mode, producing new cells and absorbing actives more effectively without competing with sunlight.
What belongs in each routine
- AM: gentle cleanser (optional if skin is not oily), antioxidant serum, moisturiser, SPF — always last.
- PM: cleanser (always), treatment actives (retinoids, AHAs/BHAs), richer moisturiser or facial oil.
- SPF is morning-only — applying it at night provides no benefit.
- Retinoids and strong exfoliating acids are best used at night — UV can degrade them and they increase photosensitivity.
- You do not need different products for AM and PM unless you are using actives that specify timing.
