Men's Skincare: Start Here

Most men use three products or fewer. Here's how to build a routine that actually works — without overcomplicating it.

Men's skincare is simple when stripped of the marketing. The skin biology is the same — the main differences are higher sebum production on average (driven by testosterone), thicker skin, and the mechanical stress of shaving. Everything else is the same three core steps: cleanse, moisturise, protect.

The core routine

  1. Cleanser — wash your face morning and night with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Soap dries skin and disrupts the pH. A purpose-built face wash is not luxury — it is the right tool.
  2. Moisturiser — men tend to skip this, often because of fear of looking "shiny." A lightweight gel moisturiser adds no visible shine while maintaining a healthy barrier.
  3. SPF 30+ — the highest-impact anti-aging and skin cancer prevention tool available. The leading cause of visible skin aging (wrinkles, texture loss, dark spots) is UV exposure, not age itself.

What makes men's skin different

  • Higher sebum: testosterone stimulates larger and more active sebaceous glands. Men tend toward oily skin and are more acne-prone into adulthood than women.
  • Thicker skin: men's skin is about 20–25% thicker on average due to higher collagen density. This delays some visible signs of aging but does not protect against UV damage.
  • Shaving: removes surface cells (a form of exfoliation) and can disrupt the skin barrier. Post-shave products that are alcohol-free and include a humectant reduce irritation significantly.

Frequently asked

No. "For men" on a label is marketing. Ingredients are what matter, and there is no ingredient that works differently based on your gender. Do not pay a premium for blue packaging.
