Choosing the Right Cleanser for Your Skin
Gel, cream, foam, oil, bar — what each cleanser type actually does and how to match one to your skin type without trial and error.
A cleanser is the one product every skin type uses twice a day, yet most people pick one based on packaging rather than formulation. The goal is simple: remove dirt, oil, sunscreen, and makeup without stripping the skin's protective acid mantle (pH 4.5–5.5). The wrong cleanser leaves skin feeling tight, squeaky, or paradoxically greasier.
Which type suits your skin
- Gel cleansers: water-based, suit oily and acne-prone skin, good at removing excess sebum.
- Cream or lotion cleansers: gentle, hydrating, best for dry or sensitive skin.
- Foam cleansers: feel light and rinse clean — check pH; many foam cleansers are alkaline and over-strip.
- Oil and balm cleansers: dissolve sunscreen and makeup effectively, excellent as the first step in double cleansing for all skin types.
- Micellar water: great for travel or minimal routines, but may leave residue — follow with a rinse-off cleanser if you wear SPF.
