Licorice Root Extract

Evidence types available

Human clinical trialIn vitro

An extract from Glycyrrhiza glabra containing multiple bioactive compounds, of which glabridin is the most studied for skin brightening. Glabridin inhibits tyrosinase and UVB-induced pigmentation, while glycyrrhizin has anti-inflammatory properties. Human clinical data shows reduction in hyperpigmentation and melasma, with a tolerability profile substantially better than hydroquinone — no risk of ochronosis or rebound hyperpigmentation on discontinuation. Licochalcone A (from a different licorice species) is widely used for its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects in sensitive skin products. Effective at reducing PIH and uneven tone with long-term use. Typically formulated at 0.5–2% standardised for glabridin content.
